Email Update: Summer 2025

It’s been a while.

Hello neighbors,

It’s been quiet on our end, but not for lack of care.

As a one-woman show, I’ll admit I’ve spent the past year wrestling with what 59051 is really meant to be and how best to build community support around the last rural school house in Carbon County.

Some of our early efforts - live jam sessions, coffee hours, and the dream of a monthly print magazine - didn’t quite take off the way I’d hoped. (Turns out, community building is tough... and pricey.)

But here’s the good news:
We recently received a $250 grant from the Red Lodge Area Community Foundation! That boost is helping us purchase a movie projector so we can launch film nights at the school. The grant doesn’t cover all the costs, but we’re moving forward anyway, and we couldn’t be more excited.

We hope these movie nights become a tradition that brings neighbors together, sparks conversation, and keeps this special place alive with laughter and light. We are also reviving community card/game nights and opening our doors to everyone for an epic Christmas Program.

For now, we’ll pause printing the community magazine (unless more financial support comes in). These emails will serve as our connection point - so stay tuned here for upcoming movie schedules, game nights, and announcements.

And if you know someone who loves Luther, please send them to 59051.org to sign up for emails updates. All are welcome here!

Thanks for sticking with us.

Cheers,
Brittany Cooper

What we’ve been up to this summer

Mark (a.k.a. Paco to the kids) also covered wilderness and bear safety over several days. Thanks Paco!

Mark Sechler, a beloved Luther school grandparent, and a volunteer for Red Lodge Search and Rescue, led hands-on summer school activities. Pictured here, the students used their new compass skills to search for hidden treasure and found it!

Bo, pictured here, caught a beautiful trout out of Red Lodge Creek under Mitch’s expert guidance.

Luther students go downhill skiing over four Fridays each winter and our favorite ski instructor is now our favorite fishing guide!

Mitch Bangert, who is our most-requested ski instructor, volunteered to teach fly fishing skills during a day of summer school!

Thank you Mark and Carol Sechler for the lovely stretch of creek front for casting practice.

Come by the cafeteria to see it progress.

Everyone in the Luther School community mourns the passing of Miss Ann. Services for Ann will be held Saturday, August 9th, at the Luther Community Church beginning at 2pm.  Burial will be at the Red Lodge Cemetery where her parents rest. Ann is dearly missed by all.
